Coal exports to China from Newcastle Port, the biggest export harbor for the fuel, totaled 401,37 tonnes in February 2010, down from 1.22 million tonnes in January and 1.47 million tonnes in December 2009, showed data from Port Waratah Coal Services.
The PWCS data confirms earlier that Chinese demand had fallen sharply in February, as the weather got warmer and demand was affected by a week long holiday in mid-Feb Lunar New Year.
Newcastle exported a total of 7.87 million tonnes coal in February 2010, of which 74% was thermal coal and the rest coking coal. www.EnergyChinaForum.co China's share of Newcastle's total coal exports fell to 5.1% in February as against 15.6% in January and 15.9% in December.
