August 04, 2009--On July 31, two AP1000 nuclear power projects were approved by central China's Hubei Province. In addition, the Hubei provincial government reached an agreement with the China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG) to further promote the development of Hubei's nuclear power industry. Hubei Xianning nuclear power plant is expected to become China's first inland nuclear power project. The main part of the project is due to start construction in the second half of 2010.
Sun Qin, deputy director of the National Energy Administration (NEA), said that vigorously developing nuclear power is an important measure to cope with the international financial crisis, and is also of great significance to optimize energy structure, protect energy security, actively respond to climate change and protect the environment. The NEA supports local governments and conglomerates to further promote the development of Hubei's nuclear power industry.
He also said that the NEA will prioritize developing nuclear power for energy restructuring and will drive the nuclear power industry to develop quickly and safely.
Following continuous and rapid economic growth during recent years, Hubei Province has an increasingly high demand for energy. Developing nuclear power has therefore become an inevitable choice.
Since the Hubei provincial government signed an agreement with CGNPG to co-develop the Hubei nuclear power project, CGNPG has been steadily promoting the construction of the Hubei Xianning nuclear power project. Hubei Province has made noticeable achievements in various works including the development of new nuclear power projects and nuclear power industrial chains.
Hubei Xianning nuclear power plant is expected to become China's first inland nuclear power project.
